THE GROWERS

Mario Alarcon is a coffee grower from Guatemala and is an advocate against “pity marketing” in the coffee industry. “Pity marketing” painted coffee farmers as sad, poor, and powerless people unable to take action to change their situation. In short, victims of circumstance. For Mario, this is not their reality. To make this a relic of the past, he, together with Christian Starry, established Truth Trading Co., a company that focuses on innovation and transparency with a savvy approach to business. No victims here– just farmers working with the company in building their own supply chain.

These beans were cultivated on Mario’s farm in Monte de Oro, right at the base of the Acatenango and Fuego volcanoes, and were dried in a climate-controlled parabolic drying house.

THE ROASTER

This particular batch of gesha coffee beans was roasted in Lakewood, Colorado by Sweet Bloom Coffee Roasters, a roastery founded by Andy Sprenger in 2013. Andy is a two-time US Brewers Cup Champion and the 2013 US Aeropress Champion. He was also named the Runner-up in the World Brewers Championship and the 2014 US Cup Tasters Championship.

TASTING NOTES

Medium-fine was our grind quality of choice. Brewed with a ratio of 1:16 using a V60, Mario Alarcon-Gesha allured us with very unique aroma and flavor combinations. Lemongrass and carabao mangoes were the most memorable characters of this brew for us. By the way, this natural gesha was a 2020 Good Food Awards winner!
