TASTING NOTES
Clear brown with a medium creamy white head that did not last long. On the nose, this Irish Stout bloomed with moderate roasty coffee, dark chocolate, and cream together with low but complementing earthy and fruity aromas. Light-medium-bodied, moderately low carbonation with a smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Rich and bittersweet dark chocolate was the most dominant flavor (moderately high) and was accompanied by impressions of vanilla and roasted malts. Low earthiness and a grape-like note were also noted and have enhanced the flavor complexity. Medium bitterness and moderately low residual sweetness both contributed to the mentioned bittersweet character. Dark roast coffee remained in the aftertaste.
THE VERDICT
Shoutout to My Ex is an easy-drinking, bittersweet, and slightly creamy Irish Stout. The aroma and flavor profiles are very strong points of this beer with the dark roasty coffee and decadent bittersweet chocolate leading the charge.
However, drinkers expecting the viscosity of an Imperial Stout or an American Stout may find this Irish Stout a bit “watery.” Crucially, this quality contributed to the drinkability of this beer without compromising the flavors. The next versions could be more opaque, but we find this to be an already excellent brew. Enjoy as a nightcap on a cold rainy evening with dark chocolate.
