STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as an Imperial Stout (20C) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Future You Hates You is a deep red-brown beer (almost black) with a mocha-colored head. Dark chocolate reigns on the nose with hints of cherries and syrup. Soft alcohol presence.

The palate is velvety and full-bodied with carbonation marginally below average. Like the aroma, dark chocolate is also present as a flavor but is reinforced with dark roast coffee and dark fruits (think of grapes and plums). Dark everything. Others noted nutty, oaky, and wine-like characters. A mosaic of earthy, spice, tobacco, and aged tea features also add to the overall flavor complexity. Low to no sweetness. No acidity. Finally, Future You Hates You leaves the palate dry as impressions of dark chocolates and hazelnut linger.

THE VERDICT

Future You Hates You is a well-balanced and drinkable “RIS” that showcases primarily dark chocolate, dark fruit, and tobacco characters. In this age of sweet pastry stouts, sometimes a proper Imperial Stout like Future You Hates You is just what you need to remind yourself why you fell in love with stouts in the first place.
