Contains No Juice is a “Hazy Double IPA” by Alvarado Street Brewery (California) and is based on a recipe that has been tweaked constantly to achieve optimal juiciness through hops and yeast. This hazy beer features the American hops Citra and Mosaic together with the addition of malted and flaked oats. In case you missed it, this beer contains no juice.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) in the context of the provisional guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) for the said beer style. The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Hazy pale straw; white head with good retention. The nose opened up with fairly high aromas of ripe mango, peach, and orange pith with slight herbal and berry tones. These aromas intensified as the beer started to settle. Medium-bodied, moderately-low carbonated with a smooth mouthfeel. Flavors of mango, cantaloupe, and pineapple were the most prominent and were supported by hints of strawberry and herbs. Bready malt backbone supported the hop flavors. Bitterness was moderate while residual sweetness was low. Floral, oaty, piney, and orange pith impressions brought this beer to a close.
THE VERDICT
Contains No Juice, which we benchmarked as a New England IPA, is a very smooth and juicy beer with unique combinations of hop aromas and flavors. The perceived orange pith aroma and cantaloupe flavor were the most memorable aspects of this beer and were both reminiscent of some beers we have tried that were brewed with Citra Incognito. The smooth mouthfeel, which was likely enhanced by the malted and flaked oats, is also a strong point of Contains No Juice. Further, the lack of intense bitterness and high residual sweetness allowed this beer to be very drinkable despite weighing in at 8.5% ABV. Overall, excellent.
