Panyero is the first hoppy lager brewed by the Manila-based craft brewery, Banayad Craft Brew.
Banayad Craft Brew is headed by brewer Marc Balanon. The earliest public appearance Banayad has made was back in early 2019 when they first released the Banayad Spiced Stout. Aside from this, previous offerings from them include the Garcias Tableya Stout, Hermano IPA, and DakotaMNL Pale Ale among many others.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as an International Pale Lager (2A) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Panyero pours a broadly clear pale gold beer with a slight degree of haziness and a thin head. The nose showcases a light profile of calamansi citrus and partially-ripe mangoes. Panyero is light-bodied as expected with the style. Meanwhile, the palate suggests a beer with a light oily/ balmy mouthfeel and a moderate level of carbonation. The hop and malt characters are in harmony: bright citrus grapefruit and lychee meld with light and bready malts. The perceived bitterness is notable and is American IPA-like (think of resin and pine) and remains even in the aftertaste.
THE VERDICT
Panyero is an aromatic and flavorful “lager” that does not shy away from showing off American IPA-like hop characteristics, albeit in a more subtle manner. While the vital statistics, more or less, point to an International Pale Lager, it is far from the fizzy and bland supermarket lagers. With the same hop combination, we think just a bit more hopping and potency would lead to something akin to an American IPA brewed with lager yeast (aka. India Pale Lager). The future versions of Panyero could have more carbonation, a well-formed head, none of the oily/ balmy mouthfeel, and, if possible, a clearer aesthetic.
