The Manila-based Banayad Craft Brew returns with Kuliglig, a light and refreshing wheat beer for those laidback drinking sessions outdoors. Kuliglig is the Filipino word for cricket and the name of this beer is an ode to those seemingly rare relaxing and quiet nights.
Banayad Craft Brew is headed by brewer Marc Balanon. The earliest public appearance Banayad has made was back in early 2019 when they first released the Banayad Spiced Stout. Aside from this, previous offerings from them include the Garcias Tableya Stout, Hermano IPA, and DakotaMNL Pale Ale among many others.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Weissbier (10A) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Kuliglig is a pale straw-colored beer with a foamy white head and some degree of cloudiness. Banana chips and wheat on the nose. This Weissbier is medium-light in body with a carbonation a notch above average. The palate sensation is light and quite drinkable.
Moderate fruity esters manifest as a ripe banana with notable bubble gum. Complementing these yeast-driven flavors is a notable sweet, malty, and bready backbone. Bitterness is very low, almost completely muted. The aftertaste leaves impressions of pear and bread with a very late dough-like note that surfaces at the very end.
THE VERDICT
At 6% ABV, Kuliglig is marginally more potent than your usual Weissbier, which usually has 4.3-5.6% ABV based on the mentioned guidelines. However, these numbers aside, Kuliglig is a very good showcase of the banana esters and bubble gum often attributed to a Weissbier. It is flavorful, refreshing, and overall, quite an enjoyable beer for those lazy drinking sessions on the hammock.
