David Pelayo “German Rye Ale” Roggenbier

Name: German Rye Ale
Brewer: David Pelayo (Philippines)
Style: Historical Beer: Roggenbier
ABV: 4.9%
Review Year: 2021

German Rye Ale is the interpretation by Manila-based homebrewer, David Pelayo of the historical beer style called the Roggenbier.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Historical Beer: Roggenbier (27A) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Hazy deep gold; large off-white head with excellent retention. On the nose: moderately low clove, banana, honey, and wheat. Medium-full-bodied, medium-high carbonation, with a slightly soft mouthfeel. The flavor profile is composed mainly of fairly high impressions of wheat, grain, rye (akin to rye whiskey) with a medium-low clove character. Bitterness was a notch below moderate and residual sweetness was almost absent. A low citrusy flavor surfaced as the beer warmed up, while the aftertaste lingered briefly with dough, rye, citrus, and some bitterness.

THE VERDICT

German Rye Ale is the first Roggenbier we have tried, so we do not have enough benchmarks for this beer yet. As perceived, this beer gives an impression of a very drinkable, dry, and malty wheat beer but with rye qualities reminiscent of rye whiskey. Some Weizen yeast qualities such as clove and banana were present, but the citrus flavor, which was more notable as the beer settled, appears to be unusual for the style based on the guidelines. Overall, this could be an alternative to the thirst-quenching Weissbier or Dunkles Weissbier in our opinion.
