STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Witbier (24A) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Hazy pale gold; foamy white head with good retention. Low honey-like malty aroma with hints of fruit (macopa), subtle orange citrus zest. No inappropriate celery aroma. Medium-bodied, moderate carbonation with a smooth mouthfeel. The flavor profile is moderately grainy-sweet malty akin to honey. This is supported by subtle orange citrus, bready, and coriander flavors. Bitterness is appropriately low, accentuated by an herbal-like quality. Crisp, dry finish (almost no residual sweetness); no inappropriate bubblegum or banana flavors.

THE VERDICT

Carnivale Royale embodies a lot of the hallmark qualities of a classic Witbier. It is a crisp and refreshing wheat beer that showcased a sweet-malty backbone with a supporting zesty citrus accent. Subtle bready and spice characteristics also contributed to the complexity of this beer. We think a slightly creamier mouthfeel and more of the zesty citrus flavor could make this beer much more interesting. Overall, Carnivale Royale is a very good interpretation of the style and is perfect for this summer season.
