STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (30A) with the American Stout (20B) as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Deep brown almost black; medium brown head that did not last long. Campfire was quite aromatic, melding prominent marshmallows with black forest cake, and graham crackers. Hints of vanilla, fruit jam, and alcohol complemented. Medium-full-bodied, moderate carbonation, with a smooth mouthfeel. The primary flavor was reminiscent of malty and bittersweet Tsokolate de batirol. Additional accents of marshmallow, graham crackers, and some ripe fruit akin to strawberry were also present. Moderately high bitterness; medium-low sweetness. Campfire finished with bittersweet dark chocolate.

THE VERDICT

Campfire (2021) is a highly delectable, bittersweet “pastry stout” that showcased primarily dark chocolate, marshmallow, and graham crackers. This stout was appropriately malty and bitter, with the pastry adjuncts and sweetness not overpowering. Hop characteristics were not explicit as more emphasis was given to the maltiness and the featured adjuncts. Compared to the 2020 version (Imperial strength), this year’s Campfire is relatively more palatable with its lighter body and lower alcohol content. All in all, we think this is an excellent beer.
