A Deeper Dish is a “Triple IPA” featuring Citra Incognito and Vic Secret hops brewed by Hop Butcher for the World (Illinois).

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Mixed-Style Beer (34B) with the Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

As of this writing, the “Triple IPA” is not an official and explicit style in the BJCP; thus, these beers still lack a comprehensive set of style guidelines. For the hazy and juicy variants, these Triple IPAs could simply be bigger-than-double versions of a New England IPA or Hazy IPA with an ABV of around 10%.

TASTING NOTES

Hazy straw, medium white head with good retention. Early on, A Deeper Dish already unleashed moderately high aromas of ripe peach and orange. These aromas became more prominent upon revisiting with more evident ripeness and fairly low alcohol. Medium-full-bodied, moderately low carbonation. Strong ripe peach, orange, and grapes dominated the flavor profile with a medium-low cantaloupe accent and a moderate bready malt backbone. Perceived bitterness was a notch above the moderate level of sweetness. As the beer settled, sweetness and alcohol were more assertive. The aftertaste lingered long and melded cantaloupe and sweetness with a subtle herbal flavor.

THE VERDICT

As mentioned, these Triple IPAs still lack a comprehensive and explicit set of style guidelines. In our opinion, Hop Butcher’s interpretation of a Triple IPA through A Deeper Dish is one that falls on the sweeter side of the spectrum but with ample bitterness and citrus qualities to back it up. With its notable residual sweetness and alcohol, one can say that drinkability is not the strongest point of this beer. We think less of the alcohol could still elevate this beer, but all in all, it is a very good one. Pair with deep dish pizza.
