Humble Sea x Cerebral “Double Brain Fog” Hop-Fused Foggy DIPA

Name: Double Brain Fog
Brewers: Humble Sea Brewing Company, Cerebral Brewing (United States)
Style: Specialty IPA: New England IPA
ABV: 8.1%
Review Year: 2021

California meets Colorado with Double Brain Fog, a “hop-fused foggy Double IPA” brewed by Humble Sea Brewing Company and Cerebral Brewing. Tons of flaked and malted oats, raw wheat, the hop varieties Citra, Galaxy, and Sabro were used to make this hazy beer.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) in the context of the provisional guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) for the said beer style. The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Hazy pale straw, low white head with fair retention. The nose opened up initially with moderate lemon zest, ripe peach with additional pineapple, white grapes, grapefruit, and strawberry as the beer settled. Medium-bodied, moderate carbonation with a subtly gritty afterfeel. Lemon zest, orange citrus, white grapes, pineapple, and pine were the most prominent flavors supported by a medium bready malt backbone. Medium-low bitterness, moderately sweet finish. A very low peppery and herbal undertone was also noted. The aftertaste lingered long with lychee, pineapple, coconut, and some sweetness.

THE VERDICT

Double Brain Fog is a hazy, juicy, and zesty IPA that leaned on the sweeter side of the spectrum. The appearance of this beer is definitely a strong point. White grapes, citrus peels, and coconut were very memorable characteristics of this beer, with the last trait associated with the Sabro hop variety. The subtly gritty mouthfeel and the low peppery undertone could still be tempered in our opinion. Nonetheless, Double Brain Fog to us is a very good beer. We think this is for the drinkers that prefer their hazy and juicy IPAs on the sweeter side.
