This brewery from the quaint mountainside of Colorado focuses on unfiltered hoppy ales, smoothie-style sours, and rustic farmhouse ales.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) in the context of the provisional guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) for the said beer style. The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Hazy pale gold; white head. Modest ripe mango aromas backed by peach and pine. Light-medium body, moderately-low carbonation; soft and pillowy mouthfeel. Vibrant but balanced mango and peach dominate the flavor profile with hints akin to raspberries on the side. Others noted that the flavors of this beer are reminiscent of a fruit cocktail. Like many other beers of the style, a lightly bready backbone supports the juicy and fruity characters as bitterness is kept low. The noted flavors stay for a while as resiny, piney, and tea-like notes surface.

THE VERDICT

Very good. The signature juicy and smooth profile of Colorado’s New England IPA is once again captured in this beer but with a nice touch of the berry-like accents. However, compared to the other similar beers from Knotted Root, we think Alternate Past might need a more aromatic nose.
