Mango Tango Paste is the latest outturn in the “paste” fruit Gose series of the Colorado-based craft brewery, Knotted Root. This Gose was brewed with sea salt, lactose, milk chocolate, mango, guava, pineapple, strawberry, and lulo. Mango Tango Paste was conditioned further on Madagascar vanilla beans and toasted coconut flakes.
Knotted Root Brewing Company is a small, artisan brewery from Nederland, Colorado, and is known to combine elements of traditional Belgian brewing with the spirit of American experimentation. This brewery from the quaint mountainside of Colorado focuses on unfiltered hoppy ales, smoothie-style sours, and rustic farmhouse ales.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Fruit and Spice Beer (29B) with the Historical Beer: Gose (27A) as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Murky, gooey, pale gold liquid; no head. The nose burst with passion fruit, apricot, partly-ripe mango with accents of vanilla, lemongrass, and pandan. Medium-full-bodied, moderately carbonated with prickling acidity, softness, and a powder-like sensation. The flavor showcased assertive citrus tartness akin to unripe mango and lemon with fruitiness reminiscent of ripe mango, passion fruit, and strawberry tempering slightly the acidity. A doughy character served as the malt backbone as it continued into the aftertaste alongside some linger brine and lime peel; finished slightly dry.
THE VERDICT
Mango Tango Paste is a fresh, playful, and citrus-forward interpretation of a fruit Gose by Knotted Root that really lived up to its name. The mouthfeel was uniquely gooey and very soft. Compared to a classic Gose, Mango Tango Paste has a more characterful appearance but without the head. This is also significantly more potent than your usual Gose but the alcohol was nowhere to be found.
Despite the fruit addition, this Gose still has the faint yet noticeable saltiness and the doughy malt flavor the base style is known for. The same, however, cannot be said for the restrained coriander hallmark. Of all the ingredients billed, milk chocolate and toasted coconut flakes were the least notable. Excellent. Bring this to your next beach trip.
