Name: Yuzu Ragā
Brewer: Lervig (Norway), Shiga Kogen/ Tamamura Honten Co. (Japan)
Style: Fruit Beer (Base Style: International Pale Lager)
ABV: 5.5%
Review Year: 2020
We revisit our encounter earlier this year with Yuzu Ragā, a collaboration beer between Lervig of Norway and Tamamura Honten Co. of Japan. Inspired by dry Japanese “pilsners,” this beer builds on the crisp and refreshing qualities these beers are known for with the yuzu fruit addition.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Fruit Beer (29A) with the International Pale Lager (2A) as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Clear straw-colored with a foamy white head. Club soda, soft oranges, and vanilla composed the aroma profile. Light-bodied with moderate carbonation; crisp. Soft orange and mango with soothing vanilla and tea; moderately-low hop bitterness. This beer leaves the palate slightly oily; subtle orange peel and tea.
THE VERDICT
Very good. As expected, Yuzu Ragā is a light, crisp, and refreshing beer that highlighted the bright citrus character of the yuzu fruit. The soothing vanilla and tea-like qualities surprised us but we think were appealing features of this beer.
