Name: Diploid Hybrid Bobek
Brewer: Madbul Cerveza Artesana (Philippines)
Style: Specialty IPA: New England IPA)
ABV: 7%
Review Year: 2020

Diploid Hybrid Bobek is one of the latest nontraditional beers from Eric de Jesus, head brewer of the Bulacan-based Madbul Cerveza Artesana. Solely hopped with the Slovenian variety, Bobek, this hazy and juicy beer showcases a very interesting mix of ripe fruits and floral characters.

The Bobek hop variety is also known as Syrian Golding B. This variety is a diploid hybrid between Northern Brewer and a TG seedling of unknown origin and is widely known as a high-quality aroma hop with excellent bitterness and aroma.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) in the context of the provisional guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) for the said beer style. The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Diploid Hybrid Bobek pours a hazy deep gold color with a thin head. The nose has assertive notes of pomelos, orange pith, ripe cantaloupes, and some vanilla and floral characters.

This single-hopped ale is light-medium bodied with a moderately-high level of carbonation. The hops seem to dominate the overall flavor profile with prominent flavors of ripe fruits particularly cantaloupe, papaya, apples, and orange citrus. Light notes akin to watermelon seeds are also noted. Meanwhile, the malt flavor is supportive and manifests as light and malty-sweet. With bitterness at moderately low levels, the “juicy” character of this beer is accentuated. As the beer warms, low hints of bread and black peppers become more evident adding complexity to the flavor profile. Slightly dry. The aftertaste lingers with a light mosaic of lemon peel, citrus, bread, pecan nuts, and star anise.

THE VERDICT

Madbul nails another impressive nonconforming beer with Diploid Hybrid Bobek. It is a very fragrant, crisp, and refreshing beer that puts together a very interesting mix of ripe fruit and floral characters.
