Glowing Green by Jiri Sladek of Métaphore (Czech Republic) explores the dialogue between barrel-aged wild beers and hops. This beer was aged for a year in oak and was generously dry-hopped with modern German and American hops.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Wild Specialty Beer (28C) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Clear pale gold with a white head. Herbal and mint-like aromas surfaced initially at moderate levels. These were then followed by a subtle mix of oak, lemon zest, mineral, and lactic acid aromas. Light-medium-bodied; moderately high carbonation. The flavor mirrored the aroma but with additional white grapes, aged pears, medium-low bitterness, and a neutral malty backbone. Glowing Green is a dry beer with an aftertaste lingered with lime peel, subtle oak, and some herbal hops.

THE VERDICT

Our first foray into the beers of Jiri Sladek has been quite a memorable one. Glowing Green is an effervescent and thirst-quenching beer that harmonizes delicate herbal and fruity hops with approachable zesty acidity as well as a touch of oak. Wild ales are challenging to benchmark due to their idiosyncratic nature, but in our opinion, this is excellent. We now look forward to more beers from Métaphore.
