Embracing the emotional complexity of women through art, the Patrons Project 13.03 aka. Seismic Shift is a multilayered juicy and hazy DDH Double IPA brewed by Northern Monk in collaboration with the Manchester-based stencil and mural artist, Tankpetrol.

The Patrons Project is an initiative by Northern Monk to foster collaboration, creativity, and community between artists, athletes, and creatives across Northern England through curating beers that represent each chosen patron. The beers from the thirteenth series are tributes to Tankpetrol, a Manchester-based stencil and mural artist originally from Poland. The art of Tankpetrol is noted to embrace the diversity of women characters. His vivid female portraits evoke the emotional complexity of a woman showing fear, anger, nostalgia, or self-confidence.

The Patrons Project 13.03 aka. Seismic Shift is a Double IPA brewed with Simcoe, Amarillo, Citra, Mosaic, and Loral hops. Flaked oats and a touch of wheat were used to make this beer hazy and have a soft mouthfeel.

TASTING NOTES

Seismic Shift conforms to style with its hazy yellow-orange color. The nose bursts with citrus notes akin to chewable Vitamin C tablets and freshly-squeezed lemonade. Fragments of cantaloupe and indistinct flowers are present as a calming contrast to the citrus explosion. Medium-bodied and moderately carbonated. This hazy double has a multilayered flavor profile. Fulsome citrus in the form of pineapples and oranges dominate the palate. These are then accentuated by notes of fermented fruits, raisins, plums, and dates. Underneath, faint floral and honey add a soothing effect, while black currant serves as a flavor backbone. Lingering sweetness and honeydew-like impressions characterize the finish.

THE VERDICT

Like Tankpetrol’s art, Seismic Shift piques the interest of its drinkers with a complex yet refreshing fruit-centric flavor and aroma profiles. Very tasty and drinkable at 8.5% ABV. Well-done.
