Reimagining everyday Northern heroes as comic book stars, the Patrons Project 9.07 aka. Northern Rumble is a delicious and fruity lactose IPA created by the Leeds-based brewery, Northern Monk.

The Patrons Project is an initiative by Northern Monk to foster collaboration, creativity, and community between artists, athletes, and creatives across Northern England through curating beers that represent each chosen patron. The beers from the ninth series are tributes to Ben Mather, a graphic designer and illustrator from Wigan. The brewery partnered with Ben to reimagine everyday Northern heroes as comic book stars.

The Patrons Project 9.07 dubbed, Northern Rumble is a double dry-hopped IPA brewed with lactose or milk sugar. The brewers used the hop varieties, Amarillo, Citra, Columbus, and Loral to accentuate key flavors.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as an Alternative Sugar Beer (31B) with the Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). Note that the Specialty IPA: New England IPA is a provisional style as of this writing, with its working definition published on the BJCP website. TASTING NOTES

A light orange-yellow beer is poured with some degree of cloudiness. The nose evokes ripe, juicy mangoes and pineapples followed further by faint aromas of oats and powdered sugar. The palate paints a much more vibrant story: ripe juicy mangoes, dried grass, ripe Chinese honey oranges (ponkan), and peaches. These bright-profiled notes are balanced out by oat-like ones.

THE VERDICT

Overall, Patrons Project 9.07 is a very delicious, sweet, and fruity beer from Northern Monk. The addition of lactose or milk sugar seemed to accentuate the fruity and sweet flavors in this beer.
