Corvo Negro, which translates to “Black Raven” in English, is an Imperial Stout brewed based on an award-winning Brazilian recipe by the California-based brewery, Novo Brazil.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as an Imperial Stout (20C) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Corvo Negro pours jet-black color with a mocha colored head. The nose evoked aromas of dark roasted coffee and malts. The palate had a medium-body, with more dark roasted malts taking over. Some spiciness and faint notes of vanilla come forward after the initial bitterness. After a sip, the Black Raven retains the dark roasted notes with some vanilla sweetness to delight.

THE VERDICT

We find this Imperial Stout to be “one-dimensional,” with the dark roasted profiles dominating at every aspect. Perhaps, more complexity from vanillas and dark chocolates would make this beer more interesting. On the bright side, Corvo Negro is quite drinkable even at 11% ABV.
