OMNIPOLLOSCOPE is a worldwide brewing collaboration spearheaded by the Swedish craft brewery, Omnipollo together with more than 20 breweries. A product of this global collaboration is the Trillium version of the OMNIPOLLOSCOPE #5, a heavy-hitting “Triple” IPA with 10% ABV.

Although the project was launched in 2019, it took the brewery more than two years to pull this project off. Omnipollo traveled around the world to collaborate with more than 20 craft breweries for five flagship brews. For each of the flagship OMNIPOLLOSCOPE variants, Omnipollo collaborated with a cluster of craft breweries. For this #5 version, Omnipollio worked with the following 10 breweries: Monkish, Trillium, Other Half, Cellarmaker, O/O, Stigbergets, Anchorage, Crooked Stave, Equilibrium, and The Veil.

It does not end there. Given that there are several variants of this “Triple IPA” listed on the internet, we think each brewery also released its own respective versions in accordance with the base recipe of OMNIPOLLOSCOPE #5. In particular, this is the Trillium version of this beer or recipe which we got from the said brewery and is distinguished with “Trillium” written on the top middle portion of the label.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Mixed-Style Beer (34B) with the Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

As of this writing, the “Triple IPA” is not an official and explicit style in the BJCP; thus, these beers still lack a comprehensive set of style guidelines. For the hazy and juicy variants, these Triple IPAs could simply be bigger-than-double versions of a New England IPA or Hazy IPA with an ABV roughly over 10.5%.

TASTING NOTES

Omnipolloscope #5 is orange-yellow and hazy. The nose had a “dank” or resiny, fruit-like character coupled with pithy orange and lime and sharp hints of alcohol. This “Triple IPA” has a medium-full body with a moderate level of carbonation. On the palate, the familiar pithy fruits return followed by accents of tangy oranges and marmalade. Boozy. After a sip, Omnipolloscope #5 stretches the mentioned pithy fruit character further, while zesty tangerines and pine bitterness surface.

THE VERDICT

While this Trillium version of OMNIPOLLOSCOPE #5 is an aroma and flavor bomb, it pales in comparison to the other “Triple” IPAs on the market in terms of drinkability. Beyond the stunning design, brewing camaraderie, and marketing push, the following answers summarize our insights on this beer:

Was this beer meant to be shared? We think it was. Is this the best version of  OMNIPOLLOSCOPE #5? We do not have enough evidence to answer this. Is it worth the hype? No. We think a beer of this caliber can be pulled off even without a 10 brewery collaboration.
