STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Wild Specialty Beer (28C) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Sploice pours an opaque pale gold beer like mango juice. The nose is represented by a medley of pandan leaf, passion fruit, jackfruit, and ripe carabao mango. On the palate, this fruited sour beer has a body a notch above medium, but with a moderate level of carbonation and a mouthfeel approaching concentrated fruit juice.

Bright citrus flavors dominate the flavor profile– a mix of dalandan, green mangoes, Sauvignon blanc, and lime. Hints of dragon fruit, pandan, and lactose sweetness surface secondarily. As expected, the malt character takes the back seat. Citrus fruits, green mangoes, and light bready crust meld to leave an impression of key lime pie in the aftertaste.

THE VERDICT

Pomona Island’s Spoloice is an enjoyable fruited sour beer with a well-integrated but diverse tartness lending from both fermentation and the selection of “exotic” fruits used. Very juice-like and very good.
