Not all that glitters is gold, sometimes it is just a can of Brexodus— the New England IPA (NEIPA) released in 2019 by the Swedish craft brewery, Stigbergets Bryggeri, in collaboration with their notorious UK counterparts: Wylam, Northern Monk, Cloudwater, and Verdant.
Brexodus is named after the beer festival with the same name. It is a New England IPA that features Golden Promise malts, oats, malted oats, and the hop varieties, Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe, and Cryo Cascade.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) in the context of the provisional guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) for the said beer style. The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
The appearance of the Brexodus is reminiscent of the filling of a peach mango pie. We expected initially a strong citrus aroma profile, a recurring theme for beers of this style. However, we were greeted by assertive notes of cranberries and passion fruit. Medium-bodied and soft. A similar profile manifests on the palate but is complemented by an oat-like backbone. Brexodus then finishes with an impression of calming tea and hints of lime citrus.
THE VERDICT
Even without the hype of a five-way collaboration and the alluring can design, Brexodus on its own is a proper take on the oat-driven New England IPAs brewed by UK craft breweries. Brexodus is also a brilliant alternative to the prominently citrus and hoppy NEIPAs in the market today. Very good.
