TASTING NOTES
Pours like motor oil with no head. Fairly low aromas of raisin, red wine, and alcohol were present. Medium-full-bodied, moderately low carbonation. Abaddon unleashed intense flavors of dark fruits (raisins, plums), red wine, and roasty malts (dark chocolate, cacao nibs, coffee) with a very subtle smokiness. Bitterness was perceived at a moderately high level, while sweetness was fairly low. The aftertaste lingered long with roasty malts, tablea chocolate, raisins, licorice, and subtle alcohol. Sugar was not explicit.
THE VERDICT
Abaddon by Tartarus Beers is a highly potent dark beer that unveiled a marriage of dark fruits and malts in a harmonious fashion. At 17% ABV, Abaddon is quite smooth and drinkable with subtle alcohol noted only in the aftertaste. This Imperial Stout is an intriguing beer that covered a diverse array of malt flavors. The sugar varieties used did not contribute explicitly to either aroma or aroma, so we think these were used mainly to bump up the ABV. In our opinion, a much more intense aroma profile could be pursued, but this is already an excellent take on the style.
