STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (30A) with the American IPA (21A) as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Clear pale amber with an off-white head. The nose is a pleasant mix of the American IPA hallmark grapefruit aroma with caramel, vanilla, and Potchi gummy candy. Style-appropriate medium-light body and moderate carbonation; smooth and broadly clean fermentation character. Sweet tangerines, caramel candy, and the distinct but moderately-low piney bitterness come forward. Malt character is perceived as caramel-like blending with some bright fruity coffee profile. The aftertaste lingers with the familiar– piney bitterness and caramel.
THE VERDICT
This Coffee IPA gives an impression of a proper American IPA base but with tempered hop bitterness most likely from the coffee addition. The coffee seems to have accentuated the bright citrus characters of the hops, giving the perceived grapefruit character a sweeter and riper quality. Overall, it is quite an enjoyable and approachable beer, but the future versions could lessen the sweetness for better balance.
