The Marc’s & Tony “Eclipse” Stout

The Marc’s & Tony “Eclipse" Stout

Name: Eclipse
Brewer: The Marc’s & Tony Brewing Co. (Philippines)
Style: American Stout
ABV: 6.7 %

The latest release from The Marc’s & Tony Brewing Co. takes us to the dark side. This is in contrast to his juicy hazy New England IPAs (NEIPAs) that have pushed further the haze craze in the Philippines. Eclipse is a stout brewed with oats, muscovado, milk sugar, malts, Saaz hops, and Voss Kveik yeast, and was released alongside Toasty Roasty, a porter with 6.5% ABV.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as an American Stout (20B)in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website. Note that this beer was fermented using a Voss Kveik strain instead of the common American varieties typical for American Stouts as of this writing. The muscovado sugar and lactose did not surface explicitly.

TASTING NOTES

Dark brown with a mocha-colored head, Eclipse unveils aromas of dark roasted malts and cacao nibs. A medium-bodied stout, this beer returns a similar, yet more pronounced dark roasted and malt-forward profile. Unlike its little brother, the Toasty Roasty porter, Eclipse does away with the syrup-like sweetness, bready, oat-like, and chocolatey notes. In short, this stout is a dark beer for people who love bitterness and dark roast maltiness. In addition, despite being brewed with the same yeast strain as the Toasty Roasty porter, funkiness or acidity that may be associated with the Voss Kveik strain was kept at bay.

THE VERDICT

As Tony had envisioned for this beer, Eclipse is an enjoyable sipping beer for the colder months of the year.
