STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) in the context of the provisional guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) for the said beer style. The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Hazy straw, medium-low white head. Engima’s Paradox evoked fairly high aromas of semi-ripe mango, white grapes, and orange. Medium-bodied, moderate carbonation with a subtle “hop burn.” Bright citrus and zesty fruits (semi-ripe mango, orange, and lemon) dominated the flavor profile with a medium-low bready and oaty malt backbone. Bitterness was perceived a notch higher than moderate while sweetness was low, giving this beer a dry impression. The aftertaste lingered with vibrant citrus notes and a low peppery “hop burn.”

THE VERDICT

Enigma’s Paradox is a relatively drier take on the New England IPA style showcasing complementary vibrant, zesty, and fruity characteristics. Semi-ripe mango and white grapes were the most memorable to the senses. This beer is flavorful and refreshing, but we think a slightly sweeter approach and less of the peppery “hop burn” could elevate this beer further. Overall, very good.
