One of the latest outturns from Tony Sindayen of The Marc’s & Tony’s Brewing Co. (MT Brewing) is Falcons Crush, a “West Coast IPA” brewed with the hop varieties Mosaic, Simcoe, Columbus, Citra, Centennial, and Cascade among others.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as an American IPA (21A)in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Falcons Crush pours a hazy dark orange-yellow color. The nose is predominantly of candied oranges and rambutan. However, very faint hints of alcohol were also noted. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft, nectar-like mouthfeel. Bitterness is kept low as flavors of candied orange sweetness, green tea, strawberry, and passion fruit composed the palate. An impression of sweet overripe fruits lingers after the sip.
THE VERDICT
Drinkers expecting a dry, straight-up hoppy and bitter IPA will be disappointed with Falcons Crush as it is a sweet and fruity beer. Despite this deviation, we still find this beer very enjoyable and are intrigued by how Tony kept the bitterness low given at least six hop varieties were used to make this beer.
