STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) in the context of the provisional guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) for the said beer style. The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Mosaic Mandarin is a hazy pale gold beer with a white head. The nose is a bouquet of mangoes, tangerines, and lychees supported by a hint of grainy malts.
The palate has a medium body and carbonation with a fruit juice-like mouthfeel. The flavor profile of Mosaic Mandarin has a perceived balance of 60 percent hops and 40 percent malts. The 60 percent is composed of flavors akin to partially-ripe mangoes, tangerines, and some lemon peel. The malt backbone is bready, biscuity, slightly sweet, but broadly supportive. Bitterness is a notch lower than medium. This NEIPA leaves the palate slightly sticky and dry with an impression of light grainy malts and lemon peel.
THE VERDICT
Overall, Mosaic Mandarin is another instant classic from Tony Sindayen. This NEIPA gets the fruitiness on point with the semi-ripe mangoes and juicy tangerines without the excess sweetness. The malt profile complements the stone fruit and citrus characters while the restrained level of bitterness makes Mosaic Mandarin very easy to drink. And with a beer that leaves the palate dry after every sip, this New England IPA will leave you wanting for more.
While this is already a top-notch brew from Tony, we would love to see him create a more thirst-quenching session-strength version of Mosaic Mandarin.
