Typsy Ram’s “Arvo Delight” American Pale Ale

Name: Arvo Delight
Brewer: Typsy Ram’s Brewing (Philippines)
Style: American Pale Ale
ABV: 6.8%
Review Year: 2020

Arvo Delight is the first bottled “American Pale Ale” brewed by Typsy Ram’s Brewing, the newest craft brewery in Silang helmed by seasoned Australian brewer, Ray Mills. Arvo Delight is a beer that does not hold back on the classic American citrus hoppy flavors.

Ray Mills started brewing in Australia when he was 40. In 2008 and 2009, he was named the Australian Nation Champion brewer and won a Tri-Nations brewing competition with participants from Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. He moved to the Philippines in 2014 and set up Munting Ilog Craft Brewery together with his partners. In 2020, Ray launched his own brewery and bar, Typsy Ram’s.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as an American Pale Ale (18B)in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES
Arvo Delight is a clear pale amber-colored beer with a light beige foamy head. The nose has moderate aromas of juicy oranges, marmalade, and some caramel. This APA is light-medium in body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slightly sticky mouthfeel. The perceived flavor balance is 70-30 in favor of hops relative to the malts. The flavors possibly contributed by the hops are dominantly citrus: marmalade, grapefruit, lime peel with some hints of peaches. The malts seem to impart accents of caramel and golden raisins.

The perceived bitterness is average and manifests as pine-like. Fermentation character may have contributed some of the fruit flavors mentioned or is simply neutral. The aftertaste lingers with impressions of lemon peel and pine.

THE VERDICT

With an ABV of 6.8%, Arvo Delight is arguably more of an American IPA than an American Pale Ale. Meanwhile, the calculated bitterness of this beer is 44 IBUs and is somewhere above the midpoint of the APA range but on the lower end of the American IPA range (2015 BJCP guidelines). Vital statistics aside, Arvo Delight is a delicious beer that does not hold back on the classic American citrus hop characters and the complementing levels of perceived bitterness and carbonation. Very good.

If you were able to try this beer, would you consider it an American Pale Ale or an American IPA? Would it even matter to you? Feel free to comment below!

By the way, Typsy Ram’s End of the Road Double IPA (8.4% ABV, 69 IBUs) is about to be released very soon. We are looking forward to Ray’s interpretation of this classic style.
