WeldWerks, the award-winning craft brewery from Colorado puts the “beer” in “root beer” with the Root Beer Float Stout. This creative concoction features root beer spices, lactose, and vanilla.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (30A)with the Sweet Stout (16A)as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
The Root Beer Float Stout is not pitch black like motor oil but is actually clear with a ruby brown color. A very thin light brown head is noted, while the nose evoked aromas of root beer and light mint chocolates. Light-medium bodied with a carbonation level slightly below medium and a soda-like mouthfeel. As with the aroma profile, a sweet root beer flavor is prominent. This is then complemented by impressions of caramel, chocolate, cacao maltiness, and hints of walnuts. The perceived bitterness is low as expected. Aftertaste: root beer and caramel sweetness.
THE VERDICT
What you see is what you get. Root Beer Float Stout is a creative attempt of WeldWerks to make a root beer inspired beer without actually adding the actual beverage. Aside from the root beer characters, the other aroma and flavors collectively add a nice finishing touch to this beer and somehow remind its drinkers that this is still beer and not soda. We are curious about how a double or imperial version of this brew would taste like.
