WeldWerks, in collaboration with Mikerphone and Great Notion, treated the craft beer fans with Breakfast for Three, a super delectable dessert-inspired Imperial Stout (10.5% ABV) infused with Peruvian coffee beans and maple syrup.
WeldWerks was established in Greeley, Colorado in 2015. Aside from being known for Juicy Bits, which is one of the highly regarded Hazy IPAs in the United States, the Greeley-based brewery is a multi-medal awardee in the prestigious Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup. In 2019, WeldWerks rolled out the red carpet and invited 45 craft breweries to their hometown for the WeldWerks Invitational. A product of this gathering is this Imperial Stout brewed with their counterparts from Chigaco and Portland.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Mixed-Style Beer (34B), combining Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (30A) and Alternative Sugar Beer (31B), with Imperial Stout (20C) as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Breakfast for Three pours a very dark brown opaque liquid, almost black under dimmer light. The aroma profile conforms to the breakfast theme: maple syrup, dark roast coffee, and some hints of plum-like esters. Medium-full bodied. The perceived flavors are of prominently dark roast coffee and chocolates. Sweet flavors meld effortlessly with the mentioned dark tones and manifest in the form of maple syrup, marshmallows, and bready pancakes. A similar yet reduced profile lingers after a sip.
THE VERDICT
We have been turned off by ultra-sweet dessert-inspired stouts in the past, but this three-way collaboration treat offers a proper redemption for this class. While we recognize this beer as something for sharing, it is a dessert-style stout that balances well the sweetness with the other aspects of the beer such as bitterness. Despite already considering this as a stellar release, we think a full-bodied version could make Breakfast for Three a much more interesting beer.
