Weizenland is the take on a classic German wheat beer by Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery from Virginia. This yeast-driven beer was brewed with 60% Virginia and 40% Single-Origin Bavarian grains.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Weissbier (10A) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

Slightly hazy deep gold; well-formed head. Weizenland opened up with moderate aromas of grain/ wheat, banana, bubblegum, spice/ clove. A hint of vanilla followed. Light-medium-bodied, moderately high carbonation, with that signature soft and fluffy mouthfeel. The flavor mirrored the aroma with moderate impressions of banana, clove, and malty wheat. A medium-low bready character joined the mentioned wheat as backbone; a faint bubblegum note added character. Slightly on the dry side; bitterness was quite tempered. Wheat melded with the banana and bubble gum lingered a bit into the aftertaste.

THE VERDICT

Weizenland is a refreshing German-style wheat beer that featured the characteristics associated with the style, mainly wheat, banana, clove, bubble gum, and vanilla. Wheat took over the void the hops had created. Among the noted fermentation byproducts, it was the banana that stood out. Further, residual sweetness felt appropriate and contributed positively to its crispness and drinkability.

Compared to a typical Witbier (Belgian), Weizenland did not have the coriander aroma and flavor. Meanwhile, this Weissbier was absent of the doughy malt character, hop presence, and bitterness of an average American Wheat Beer. Personally, we would prefer more carbonation, but we also understand that this was canned and was reviewed three weeks after the packaging date. All in all, we think Weizenland is an excellent take on the style.
