Amigos de la Playa “Pendejos” Double IPA

Disclaimer: We will come clean. This review was, unfortunately, written at a time when we were not aware that mats of bubbles are symptoms of a dirty glass. Just because we are Drink Me Dirty, it does not mean it is acceptable to drink from a dirty glass. Clean and rinse your glasswares properly. Name: Pendejos
Brewer: Amigos de la Playa (Philippines)
Style: Double IPA
ABV: 8.5%
Review Year: 2019

The boys from Amigos de la Playa (ADLP) finally made their canned beer debut, starting with their flagship Double IPA, Pendejos. This Double IPA was double dry-hopped with Amarillo and Mosaic hops.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Double IPA (22A) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

TASTING NOTES

In a menacing dark amber color, Pendejos is a boozy bomb that explodes with aromas of caramel bar, alcohol, peach, and apple. This Double IPA goes heavy on the palate: fruitcake, lychees, peppers, apples, and interestingly, rum. Despite the complex profile, Pendejos remains remarkably crushable and juicy.

THE VERDICT

Overall, we regard this flagship Double IPA of Amigos as a juicy and boozy beer for the big boys. With this successful release, we now look forward to another ADLP can release—the notorious flagship New England IPA, Life of Pablo.
