Green Galaxy is a “New-American Hoppy Ale” released in 2019 by Foreign Objects, a microbrewery from New Paltz, New York. This double dry-hopped beer is the liquid manifestation of the brewery’s exploration of the complex multi-chromatic shades of green that create a dripping sensory experience.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as an American Pale Ale (18B) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Green Galaxy does not pour green but slightly hazy straw with a white foamy head. The aroma profile evoked moderate notes of fresh banana leaf, glutinous rice cake (suman), and hints of lemon peel. Medium-light-bodied; moderate carbonation. A soft and velvety mouthfeel was also noted. A sip of this beer would let you know that hops primarily compose the overall flavor profile. These hop flavors are fresh, like Oolong tea, lemon peel, fresh banana leaf, and a slight mix of grassy and fresh herbal flavors. Bitterness is well-integrated. Nothing medicinal or hot. No impressions of it being a “green” or an underdeveloped beer. The familiar lime peel, fresh banana leaf, and grass-like characters linger in the aftertaste.
THE VERDICT
Green Galaxy is an easy-drinking (unfiltered) pale ale that delivers fresh hop characters. It is fascinating how these fresh characters were extracted from the hops without the overly bitter, grassy, and vegetal notes. Moreover, despite this beer looking like a New England IPA, it does not have those fresh fruit flavors and characters the style is known for, which is another interesting feature of this beer.
As mentioned, despite having “green” in the name, Green Galaxy is far from being considered an underdeveloped one. It is, in fact, the complete opposite. The label design is stunning and complements the overall aesthetic of the beer. Very good.
