Left Handed Giant (LHG) Brewong Co. released their own version of the classic malt-forward British session ale, the Dark Mild, as a tribute to their historic brewpub site.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Dark Mild (13A) in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The said guidelines were used since we reviewed this beer before 29 December 2021, the date of publishing of the 2021 update. The most current version can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
Slightly hazy ruby brown; thick, light brown head (maybe from agitation) with good retention. The aroma melded malts (e.g., cacao nibs, dark chocolate, coffee, roasted barley) with fruits reminiscent of cherries and malts. Light-medium-bodied; moderately low carbonation, and smooth. Flavor balance favored the malts with moderate impressions of nuts, cacao nibs, dark chocolate, and roasted barley. Hints of wild cherries, earthy hops, and coffee were also noted. Moderately low bitterness; low sweetness. This Dark Mild finished with subtle cacao nibs and grapes.
THE VERDICT
LHG Brewpub’s Dark Mild is an outstanding interpretation of the classic British style. It is one of those soothing and flavorful malt-forward beers that can be consumed in quantity. Our only regret is not getting that 5-liter mini keg.
