STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Specialty IPA: New England IPA (21B) in the context of the provisional guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) for the said beer style. The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.

Dry-hopping is a brewing technique of adding hops after the boil to extract more aromas and less bitterness from the hops. As to “double,” that could either mean twice the amount of hops used in the first round or dry-hopping the beer for an additional time

TASTING NOTES

Hazy pale straw with a well-formed off-white head. Soft orange, pineapple, and lemon peel on the nose. Medium-light bodied; style-appropriate carbonation. Partially ripe pineapple, lychee, mango, and orange flavors at the forefront with tempered fruity-sweetness. Secondary grassy, java apple (macopa), and floral notes surface adding to the flavor complexity. Malt character is subtle and bready; bitterness is moderately low. The aftertaste mirrors the flavor palate but with subtle peppery heat; leaves the palate slightly puckering like eating a java apple.

THE VERDICT

Very good. Way Down DDH may not be the “juiciest” beer from Outer Range we have tried so far, but it brings more flavors beyond the usual citrus fruit spectrum as it balances these with the right dosage of bitterness and malt presence. In other words, Way Down DDH is a beer that trades ripe fruity juiciness for more flavor depth and complexity but still maintains its ridiculous drinkability.
