TASTING NOTES
Cloudy amber brown with a medium brown head. On the nose, this beer had moderate spicy/clove, banana bread, and caramel aromas. Medium-bodied, moderate carbonation, with a slightly soft/fluffy mouthfeel. Like the aroma, the flavor profile evoked a moderately low spicy impression with hints of banana and bubble gum. Malt backbone could be described as slightly bready, doughy, and wheaty with a very low caramel character. Bitterness was perceived to be low, while sweetness was a notch slightly higher. Subtle roasted cacao maltiness lingered momentarily as aftertaste.
THE VERDICT
Palm Tree Abbey’s Dunkles Weissbier is an easy-drinking, moderately spicy-malty dark German wheat beer with an interesting mix of banana, bubble gum, and caramel. In our opinion, less or none of that roasty character in the aftertaste could still be pursued, but this is already a very good take on the style.
