The Marc's & Tony "Butter Nut Porter" Baltic Porter

Name: Butter Nut Porter
Brewer: The Marc’s & Tony Brewing (Philippines)
Style: Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (Base Style: Baltic Porter)
ABV: 8.1%
Review Year: 2019

The colder months of the year call for dark, flavorful beers. The Marc’s & Tony just released Butter Nut Porter, a Baltic Porter brewed with peanut butter and lactose. If you are one of the lucky ones, you will get a variant brewed with coffee.

STYLE GUIDELINES

This beer is being evaluated as a Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (30A) with the Baltic Porter (9C) as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website. Note that this beer was brewed with lactose.

TASTING NOTES

Butter Nut Porter pours dark brown in the glass, almost pitch black with less light. It has a creamy-looking mocha head with aromas of peanut brittle, whisky, alcohol, banana bread, peanut butter, and cacao nibs. We also picked up some notes of nail polish along the way, although not too distracting. This Baltic Porter is medium-bodied, with a palate characterized by choc-nut candy, acidic coffee, sour grapes, chocolates, and fresh green apples. It leaves a lingering finish of chocolate, cacao maltiness, and grapes.

THE VERDICT

We find Butter Nut Porter as one of Tony Sindayen’s best dark beers this year. This beer has gone full-on with the flavors while maintaining its drinkability. Further, the coffee really balances out the peanut butter and lactose used to make this beer. Butter Nut Porter really is a beer to enjoy during this time of the year. We will probably get more cans to enjoy for Noche Buena.
