Orange Lemon Bomb is a Double IPA brewed with orange and lemon peels and is the enhanced version of a signature beer brewed by Tony Sindayen of The Marc’s & Tony Brewing Company. Unlike the previous outturns, this batch of Orange Lemon Bomb was fermented using a citrus yeast and has more hops.
STYLE GUIDELINES
This beer is being evaluated as a Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer (30A) with the Double IPA (22A) as the base style in the context of the 2015 Beer Style Guidelines of the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The most current version of the guidelines can be found on the BJCP website.
TASTING NOTES
The initial pour is a semi-clear pale amber beer with a foamy white head. The beer approaches clarity as it settles down. Orange Lemon Bomb lives up to its name with an aroma profile of orange and lemon peels backed by a soothing caramel character.
This Double IPA is a light-medium bodied beer with a moderately low level of bitterness. As to the fermentation character, it is perceived to be “clean.” The yeast may have contributed to the citrus esters that complement the overall citrus theme of this beer or simply is a neutral one that took the back seat. Maybe it is something else. These mentioned attributes make Orange Lemon Bomb a very drinkable beer. For the flavor, think of light orange pith, tea, and hints of fruity-floral notes with a neutral malt presence to balance. Moreover, even at 8% ABV, alcohol heat is well-tamed. Zesty orange and lemon peels linger in the aftertaste.
THE VERDICT
Unfortunately, since we do not have notes on the previous iterations of this beer, we do not get to compare. Nonetheless, this outturn of Orange Lemon Bomb is a “clean” and easy-drinking Double IPA that highlights citrus fruit peels sans any unwanted citrus acidity. Very good.
